August 1909 Rosa’s reply to the statement that her son’s death should not be investigated for the good of the Marine Service.

“Mrs. James Nuttall Sutton replies to the statement that her son’s death should not be investigated for the good of the Marine Service.” Approximately August 8, 1909, Rosa Sutton wrote this response to Major Leonard’s harsh remarks. At the top in her handwriting is the comment “this must all be printed just as it is or not at all.” She likely had some help at least with typing this statement but there’s no indication that it was printed. It is a detailed statement in the original carbon copy found in family papers that reveals the passion driving her crusade. Discussed in the book on pages 209-210.
